White background vs transparent PNG: which to use

When to export product images on a white background and when a transparent PNG is the better choice.

Use white for primary listing images

Most marketplaces expect primary product images on a clean white background. White keeps the focus on the product and looks consistent across a catalog and in search grids.

A flat white background with a soft contact shadow under the product reads as professional without looking over-edited.

Use transparent PNG for flexibility

A transparent PNG lets you drop the product onto any background later — banners, ads, collages, or a colored storefront section. It is the most reusable format for design work.

Transparent files are larger, so keep a transparent master and export flattened, compressed versions for actual listings.

A simple rule of thumb

Export white for the marketplace listing itself, and keep a transparent PNG when you also need the product for ads and creative layouts.

Whichever you choose, review the edges of the cutout before publishing — thin or fuzzy edges are the most common giveaway of a rushed edit.
